10 Things You Don’t Need to Spend Money on for Your Wedding

Weddings are expensive. Like, really expensive. And somehow, once you put the word “wedding” in front of something, the price seems to magically double.

But here’s the good news: there are plenty of things you can skip, simplify or DIY without your wedding feeling any less special.

Here are 10 places we’d happily save the money.

1. Wedding Favours

Most get left on the tables. Seriously. Your guests are already getting a great day, food, drinks and memories with you. They don’t need a personalised bottle opener.

2. Elaborate Invitations

Beautiful stationery is lovely, but it ends up in the bin. Digital invitations or simple printed cards can do exactly the same job for a fraction of the price.

3. A Giant Wedding Cake

If you love cake, absolutely go for it! But if you’re buying a five-tier masterpiece purely because it’s what you’re “supposed” to do, consider a smaller display cake with something cheaper for serving.

4. Brand-New Wedding Shoes

They’re under your dress for most of the day. Wear something you already own, grab a comfortable pair on sale, or buy second-hand.

5. Matching Bridesmaid Everything

Matching dresses, shoes, jewellery, robes, bags… it adds up quickly. Pick the things that actually matter to you and let the rest go.

6. Expensive Getting-Ready Outfits

You don’t need $100 personalised pyjamas for everyone to get beautiful getting-ready photos. Neutral PJs, button-up shirts or clothes everyone already owns work perfectly.

7. Huge Floral Arrangements Everywhere

Flowers are gorgeous, but you don’t need them covering every available surface. Put your floral budget where it’ll have the biggest impact — and where you’ll actually see them in your photos!

8. A Fancy Getaway Car

Unless cars are your thing, nobody is going to judge you for arriving in a normal car. Spend that money somewhere you’ll actually appreciate it.

9. Wedding Traditions You Don’t Care About

Bouquet toss? Garter? Cake cutting? Formal entrances? If you don’t actually want to do it, you don’t have to pay for it just because it’s traditional.

10. Things You’re Only Buying for Instagram

This might be the biggest one.

Before spending money, ask yourself: Would I still want this if nobody else ever saw it?

Your wedding doesn’t need to look like somebody else’s Pinterest board. It needs to feel like you.

At Budget Wedding Stories, we’re big believers that an incredible wedding doesn’t need an incredible price tag. Spend your money on the things you’ll genuinely remember — and don’t be afraid to skip the rest.
